Plastic covers for seed trays

I was going to buy some plastic covers for my seed trays when I discovered 3 in my greenhouse. They have yellowed with age but other than that are ok. Will they still be okay to use or would I be better off buying new?
We don't need to do it perfectly - good enough is exactly that GOOD ENOUGH.

  • They would be fine until the seeds germinated, after that I doubt they would let enough light through so you may end up with spindly seedlings. It depends really whether you need them on the seed trays after germination has occurred. I'd happily use them for robust things where I would be taking the cover off anyway.

For most seeds you can get away with using cling film or a clear plastic bag over the seed tray. Just remove it as soon as they germinate.

The plastic tops you inherited will be fine too!

Some seeds like it dark to germinate so always read the packet carefully before planting.

if you are handy with a pair of scissors you can cut plastic pop bottles up to make mini cloches by either cutting the bottom off and leaving the lid on but unscrewed a bit, and put that completely over a small pot.
Or cutting a big 3ltr bottle top and bottom off, and then along the middle to make a mini cloche using a bit of card or flat plastic at each end.
My Mind wanders, if found please return.

Yesterday I saw in Aldi's. a pck which contained, seed tray/individual potting tray & clear cover. I don't know how many of each were in the pack or the price. But it struck me as a good cheap idea. I've had a look on their website, but they've now moved on.

I bought some of these earlier this week. They are in packs of three and cost £2.99.
