Wisdom tooth removal at Guys hospital

I cant find other sites to put this question so thought I would ask here, here goes.

Hi I have a question, has anyone had their wisdom tooth removed recently at guys hospital?

I saw a dentist and he has sent a referal off to Guys for me as my wisdom tooth is under the gum and in awkward place so he said I would be better off having it done at guys, I had the others out years ago at a dentist, my last I was put under IV sedation I think its called which suited me as I am very nervous and know its very painful if you are awake anyway, as my first one I was awake and in the dentist chair hour and half and I collapsed when I came out, never again.

I have a bottom one to come out and dentist said it could be causing infection thats why the pain.

My questions are this?

From the dentist letter, how long will I wait before my first appointment at the hospital for this?

How long after that will I wait again until I actually have it out?

I do hope its not a situation where you go for this and that apppointment at hospitals where it ends up getting dragged out all the time, you know what I mean, when you think, are they ever going to do this or just talk about it, seeing this consultant and that consultant.

Any info useful?

Plus I am going to request they put me out to as I cant be awake going thru all that pain again,

I do have hypertension and thyroid disease which is controlled my meds, I hope this wont put them off sedating me, especially the hypertention, I mean, lets be honest here, its not them going thru it all is it really. The pain of having the thing pulled out.

Because my tooth is under the gum not even come thru at all, could only see it on Xray and its right next to my other normal tooth as well.

I guess the proper question would be, what is the entire precedure from when hospital receive letter from dentist there after?

Thanks

    Hi,

I've recently had a few wisdom teeth removed at Guys. The referral can take a while because it is an extremely busy department but they are very understanding and make every effort to ensure you are comfortable.

If I remember correctly I had to go for a 'consultation' before they started carrying out any work, they take xrays, ask questions about your health/meds etc.

    Hope it all goes well

Thanks for reply, when you had it done,

did they put you under sedation or was you awake?
or did they give you a preference?

I am very nervous and would have to be put under really.

How long did you wait for your first consultation after your dentist sent letter?
and after your consultation how long did you wait after that?

    Thanks

    Hi,

I have been sedated for all my treatment at Guys due to an over developed gag reflex. They do ask if you are willing to try gas/air and acupuncture etc but will go by what you choose.

My referral was sent to the wrong hospital by the local dentist so I can't say how long that part takes. But after the initial consultation at guys I think it was about 2-3 weeks until my first 'proper' appointment.

Thanks so much for your info, appreciated. The dentist faxed the form today as the hospital said its quicker, and I checked and the received the faxed form from dentist. They told me it can take up to 12 weeks before I will even see a consultant but if I ring every week I may get in with a cancellation. Thanks for the time on the 2nd part of once seen consultant. I have some idea now, but I will be on to them all the time so they dont forget about me.

I remember having gas once when I was a young child and it made me feel sick after, I will tell them I want to be put under, telling me they offer other options is also useful, thanks for that info as well. I have been put under before with IV so am fine with it.

    Hi again

When you say your first proper appointment after consultation, do you mean after consultation 1st proper appointment was when they removed them?

I got an appointment early in 3wks, was told orig be 12wks. so hope after that I will get in early and hope they dont make me wait 12wk after that?

I had two wisdom teeth extracted at Guys as I at that time 1960 worked across the road from the hospital and it was easier than going to my local dentists.I can only say that even 50 years ago it was a brilliant teaching hospital and I couldn't have had better treatment.I also had a back tooth filled there, and the filling hasn't moved at all in all that time
It was done by trainee dentist and the supervisor used to come along to check that it was done properly, and if they wern't happy with the result they had to re-do it, my back tooth was redone twice until he was happy with it and my own dentist says it was done very well to have stayed there for 50 years.I had a needle to deaden my jaw I think in those days it was cocaine :)but I never felt a hing and I went back to work afterwards

that was a long time ago, I wasnt born until 1968. I dont think they use cocaine anymore but other drugs. but with the cut backs now the waiting is longer

My grandfather was a brilliant dentist! He sorted out his own, his wife's, his daughter's (my mum) and his sons. He threatened to take a tooth out for me, forty odd years ago,but when I found out what he used I made for a 'real' dentist!!

By the way he was a third generation dairy farmer and was well taught by his father and his father before that on how to extract teeth from cattle and horses!!!

And you may think I jest!!!
