Carpenter/Joiner - Alcove Wardrobes costs

Hi All,

Hope someone can help.

I'd like to have a couple of alcoves in my bedroom at either end of a wall turned into fitted wardrobes. They would probably be fairly basic with plain MDF doors and perhaps some internal shelving/structures inside them too if I can afford it.

Only I have absolutely no idea what the typical cost for a joiner/carpenter to do this is likely to be.

Before I get a few quotes in - I wanted to gather some opinions on probably costs. I realise it is highly dependant on a number of factors but I'm really just after probably price ranges or something directional/ballpark to go on.

Anyone have any idea? I'm in East Sussex....

After material costs which you can usually work out yourself roughly, the labour cost can't be too high to stick some nails and joints, hinges into the walls?

I would probably look at b&q / wickes to get some material costs and then add on labour costs which can't be above £100 I would imagine.

I used one of the internet trader sites to find someone to do some work - just post an ad on there and get some quotes from recommended tradesman in your area.

Appreciate your response but I am assuming it will be a little more than that in labour costs.

Having done some further research on the net - I'm beginning to get the impression that this will likely be in the region of £800-1000 per wardrobe (materials and labour).

If I'm right, then whilst it is true I don't know for sure what the materials/labour split of that is - I believe that more than £100 of it is labour.

I'm looking for a skilled joiner at least - as opposed to a general handyman - as whilst much of the work is probably straightforward I would appreciate a smart high-quality finish.

Can anyone confirm or deny the above estimate sounds realistic?

Three of my friends have had wardrobes built in alcoves in their Victorian properties. On average paid £1000.

We had some done in an alcove and above the stairs bulkhead. We had hanging in the alcove and shelving above the bulkhead so we could hide away the tv as well. We paid about £500 for labour and materials.

  • Thanks! They look good and that a fair bit cheaper than I would expect...
