Help with Dell Studio 1558

I've got a Dell Studio 1558 laptop which I bought in September 2010 and which is now refusing to switch on!
It was damaged recently when I was on holiday (although I really don't remember anything untoward happening to it) but the report said it was just a broken screen which I will replace once my insurance pays out. I haven't had any problems with it apart from part of the screen being black where its been damaged.
I used it on Wednesday with no problems but went to use it tonight and it won't switch on. I've plugged it in and the charger light is on, the laptop power light is on, but I'm getting nothing when I press the 'on' button - no light, no noises, nothing. I've left it plugged in for awhile but for the life of me I can't get it to power up.
Any idea whats up? I've got an essay to do for 21st March so panicking a lot right now! Especially as I paid £700 for it and can't afford a replacement
Thanks

try holding the power button in for a few seconds then then try again...sometimes worksAlways remember that you're unique, just like everybody else:cool:0 -
More help with a Dell Studio 1558 sought I'm afraid. I too bought this about 2 years ago, it's been fine until now, but as of Wed eve it's refusing to detect any wireless networks (there are several in my vicinity)
. I know it's the laptop rather than the network as the one I use for work is running fine.
The problem noted is that the wireless capability is turned off, which has had me searching for a non-existent switch on the side of the machine (Fn/F2 is not cutting it).
I'm told that my options are:
1) download a wireless card online
2) if this doesn't work, seek professional help to install a new one
At step 1 atm, have googled the card (a DW1501 Wireless-N WLAN Half-Mini Card) but am a bit reluctant to download anything w/o any assurances about safe sites?
Any advice designed for luddites is welcome!
TIA, VfM
ETA: Worra twit - F2 w/o the Fn worked!!! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
But I'd still like some advice on safe sites should the problem occur.Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

On the Studio 1558, you switch the wireless function on and off by pressing the wireless key (not Fn/F2). It's like a cap 'A' with little pulses coming out of it.
If that doesn't work, what does it say under the wireless card in Device Manager? Have you tried reinstalling the drivers? No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

its more likely if the laptop light goes on then off again.0 -
does it make a fan noise at all when starting up? Fans over CPU need to work and without one , a CPU would overheat in seconds, if modern chips get too hot they have a circuit built in to shut them down instantly to avoid lasting damage -that could be it, - I have fixed many a PC with this problem in my time in the industry however I'm only saying this might be the case, I'm not saying it is, because the reasons for what you described are many
its more likely if the laptop light goes on then off again.
The OP's request dates from March.0
