Mobile Phone Factory Reset

Checked the mobile forum but as this is a tech type question decided to post here. Hope someone can advise.
Sometime back I cracked the screen of my Wildfire S and had it repaired by a local phone shop. The screen has become unresponsive, by that I mean that the ring that unlocks the phone is quite often unresponsive. I’ve read on other forums that doing a factory reset can help cure this problem.
I have no data on my phone that I can’t easily replace so in that regards I’m quite content and the process does seem simple enough.
I’ve already copied all of the files and folders on the Wildfire S to my computer but I’m wondering what will happen to text messages I’ve on the phone (that said I’ve none of any importance).
More important what will happen to the apps I have downloaded onto the phone. I guess they are lurking somewhere within the folders but I’ve went through all of the folders but can’t figure out where they are hiding.
Any suggestions?
Kevin

They will also be deleted from the handset, but Android Market knows what you have installed.More important what will happen to the apps I have downloaded onto the phone.
They reside in the /system/app folder, the handset needs to be rooted in order for the end user to be able to access that part of the operating system.I guess they are lurking somewhere within the folders but I’ve went through all of the folders but can’t figure out where they are hiding.Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car
Oversteer is when you hit a wall with the back of your car
Horsepower is how fast your car hits the wall
Torque is how far your car sends the wall across the field once you've hit it0
