Temporary Motor Insurance Cover

I've just bought another car and have 7 days dealer cover on it. The car it replaces has to be sold. If I get temporary cover for the new car in just my wifes' name, will it be fully covered even though I'm the registered keeper? Temporary cover is cheaper with only one driver and she needs to use it whilst I sell the old car.
(My existing policy runs to end of March, when I can get much lower quotes for new car from other insurers, hence changing policy with current insurer appears much more expensive, £250, than temporary cover £90 for 10 days). Can't get clear answer from temporary cover insurer call centre about how the new car is covered when wife not driving it and like most insurance if it seems too good it is time to be wary.

Any experts on temporary cover?

  • Had a similar problem recently. Temp cover was quite expensive. Solved by buying a new policy and cancelling within the 14 day grace period. All you pay is a pro-rata rate +£25 admin. Was much cheaper than a temporary cover.

Yes, temporary cover is full cover - I've used it quite a bit for borrowing tow cars and getting laid-up classics back on the road. A couple of days temp cover to get to an MOT and tax before sorting the main policy is quite convenient sometimes with stuff that's been standing a while seeing as the MOT is often their first proper drive for many years and snags can show up as things start to move again!

It's a "named" policy on the car's registration number and can be used for things like taxing the car and to satisfy the continuous insurance regs, but (usually) NOT for recovering cars that have been seized by the Police.

The only thing to bear in mind is that the temp cover companies (in my experience anyway) can be a little slow to get the policy onto the MIB database, so it's worth her making sure she carries the certificate in case someone with ANPR decides she's not insured ;)

Most insurance companies allow both cars on the single policy whilst you sell the outgoing car. I just swapped my new car onto the policy and they also covered the car I was selling for 31 days for a cost of £15.

This used to be the norm but sadly, due to the new regulations, is getting less common.
