I teach on a 0.5 contract (equiv to 2.5days per week). Ive been informed by my head that my hours are being cut for September as the dept is overstaffed. She told me that they don't need me at all but are willing to offer me a very reduced contract so they dont have to let me go.
Is it right they are allowed to do this? Why have only my hours been cut and nobody else in the department?
(my gut feeling is that she wants rid of me but dosnt want to make me redundant for some reason(are there stats for how many people they get rid of??!) so is reducing my hours in the hope that Ill get fed up and leave)
Please help- any advice very welcome.

From the direct.gov website:
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Employment/RedundancyAndLeavingYourJob/Redundancy/DG_10029832Your employer cannot select people for redundancy based on the following grounds:
gender
marital status
sexual orientation
race
disability
religion or belief
age
trade union membership
health and safety activities
working pattern (eg part-time or fixed-term employees)
So to pick you just because you work part-time would be wrong and would automatically be unfair dismissal.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Have you contacted your Union?
There should have been a process of consultation.Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY"I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness" Emily DickinsonJanice 1964-2016

Thank you- I have contacted the union but had no response yet. My head hates unions - I feel like Im stuck between a rock and a hard place because if I do stay (e.g. the union fights for me) then it will be very unpleasant for me working there.0

Contact your Union to ask for advice. However, if they are overstaffed by the same number of hours as you are employed it would make sense to cut your job rather than make a full time person part time so they end up having two part time people on staff. I know that's probably not what you want to hear so do talk to your union as I may be wrong. You may be able to be redeployed in another department or if another school in the borough/county has a position available you could be redeployed there.0
