  • I don't think a Job lasting six months and other short term work is really getting people off benefits as you will need to get back on benefits in between Work with all the hassle that involves.
As for Work Programme Schemes any that involve disabilities and people long term unemployed will need very serious investment in the individuals concerned as well as deep commitment on the employers behalf to recruit Talent from those who have become deskilled away from the world of work in many imaginable and unimaginable ways.
I get the impression that Corporate Britain is happy to have people like that on the margins of employment ie social enterprises rather than the mainstream where the various corporate values (ageism, disablism, mentalism) will be challenged as well as their youthful image.
Quite frankly if they are gonna do it do it properly but make room for those who willl need to live on welfare for rest of their lives to have decent lives and conditions ie non harassment and persecution.

  • Do what you HAVE to do but don't sign the Data Protection Waiver? (see Activists Blogs for more).
I wish I didn't have to be skeptical.

It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.
  • Re: Boycott Workfare. It ain't real jobs let alone real career choice.

YTS & ET were the Thatcherite 80's version of the so called exploited. Exploited they were thank God. Exploited in that case and in this case is an essential pre-requirement of gaining the skills, independence and self-esteem that comes through working.

Hmmm, my stance as a person who has for over 30 years employed several score of people.

    1. YTS & YOP was a good thing. Classic problem for the young, cannot get experience without work. Cannot get work without experience. For the young it was the perfect was for a no risk employment. You will never beleive the amount of times the same issues arose again, again and again. Grannies(insert any member of family) that constantly died on Monday's or within the next day of pay day. The group in question present an issue for the employer, afterall, why take on a kid who will contribute nothing but problems (and they all did) for the first two years. Give employers free tax breaks for ever "real" apprentice they employ!

    2. Today's employment market. We make very little in the UK today. The reason why Germany (who had a larger deficit than the uk prior to the financial crash) is not in the same problem as us is they DO make things, therefore can on a large scale operate these schemes. The UK, save for a few instances, is only a cottage industry manufacturer. Our remaining jobs are low value service or small scale high tech. Therefore killing the chance of the young. If you are clever enough to go and get a degree (worthwhile one) you don't need the entry to employment schemes. The other leaves employer open to taking someone on sufferance who performs a service so badly it damaged their reputation.

    3. Pluss , Connexion etc and workfare. This IS slave labour and I urge everyone to boycott it. As an employer when paying people I liked to look them in the eye and know they enjoyed, wanted and took pride in working for me. I took pride in paying a good wage. The human being has one commodity they can exchange for money, time. We all have it, just don't know how much we have. You exchange your time for money. Simple. If in a negotiation you start off at a rock bottom position, where can you go? Tell me when anyone has managed to start at zero and negotiated for higher rates?

    4. The demographics of employers has generally changed in this country. In 1950, a company owner knew they had to pay for the cost of labour. 99.9999% knew people went to work to feed their family's. They provided benefits for employees, but knew you exchanged a weeks work for money. Today in the UK we have a big change, whether it is European's, Asians, far east, many of these employers only look for themselves. So free labour adds to the bottom line.
"old fashioned" British bosses who knew their workforce and dependants, therefore needed to engage them. Different cultures, different aims and objectives.

    5. In today's labour market is awash with 2.9 million people who are able bodied, dont really need time off for health reasons, need no adaptations or "reasonable adjustments" to start work. What real hope do the genuine disabled have in the face of that?

Give up your time and work for free at your peril. Once you can be seen to work the next step is the loss of DlA, IB or ESA. Do you not think this is the thin end of a large wedge?

George Osborne made a really great point last week. When he was saying collecting 50p tax rate was impossible to collect and was unworkable, this needed to be changed and dropped it to 45p.Well sir, two can play that game! If the disabled all did the same they would change the rules.
  • I've been referred to Work Choice, run by Pluss, which is supposed to help the disabled & those with long term health issues who have been unemployed for a while find (& then keep) employment.

I don't know anyone else who has heard of it yet, never mind been through the programme!

Having had "support" from jobcentre+ for some time, & been on other "training" courses, I'm not sure this will be any better & my initial chat was frustrating...

Can anyone give me words of encouragement about it? Thanks.

    - you may get your wished outcome anyway
    - how did you eventually get on ?
