Thanks everyone. To clarify this isn't just my house. It's our whole block. Areas around us don't suffer the loss of power we do. Scottish power ran a voltage test a few years ago and we had a meter checking for drop in supply. That all came back clear. I have surge protectors on most items however it is not recommended that you use an extension lead on a washing machine. None the less it cannot be good for electrical items to keep losing power. During the summer we can have as many as 15 auto reclosers in a week - the worst being 17 in one day! Surely Scottish Power have a responsibility to act upon these and put preventative measures in place.
At that frequency you should be recording each and every event and notifying them (distributor not supplier), even better if the others can do the same. It may there is a problem causing it, low hanging branch, that they are not aware of.

I would be surprised that Scottish Power have not put up any FPI (fault passage indicators) which would allow Scottish Power to narrow down a fault on the overhead line. The FPI's are put up on the o/h network in sections to try & help them to narrow down a fault.

An auto reclose could be down to the wildlife or trees hitting the overhead line but to be having up to 15 in a week is very unusual and normally if you have that many a/r then the main network normally trips itself out.

I would talk to Scottish Power & ask them what they are doing to resolve the problem as that many a/r would indicate a fault on the overhead line. Most distribution companies normally have linewalkers who walk the line to see if any problems with the overhead network & they can use helicopters to find out what is causing these problems.
