i work in a cold store at -18 for 9 hours and get on hour break all day that cant be right.
OK I've done a lot of hauling out of coldstores.
1) Because of the temperature you're working in, BY LAW you have to get "warm breaks" every so often, at least once an hour and these have to be taken in a heated room with hot drinks freely available. The lengths and frequency of the breaks depends on the nature of the work and the exposure - someone on the loading bays won't get as many warm breaks as someone stacking boxes on pallets in the freezer.
2) Warm breaks aside, under the working time directive you are only entitled to a 20 minute break every 6hrs working. You're working 9 hrs so you're only entitled to 20 minutes so an hour is in excess of this.0 -

Just to clarify (and still not in relation to sub-zero temperatures) - the WTRs for an adult worker allow for a 20-minute unpaid break if the shift lasts for MORE THAN 6 hours.
It is not "every 6 hours".
If the shift last exactly 6 hours, there is no entitlement to any break.
If it were to be 13 hours long, the entitlement would still be to only one 20-minute break.0
