hi techie peeps,
my DD's laptop is on its last legs, so I'm looking for a replacement. She doesn't do anything heavy on it (like gaming and stuff), but she does store her photos on it and she does like watching DVDs on it occasionally.
I've seen a laptop with the same spec as the one she has (which is fine for her needs) but it doesn't have an integral CDrom. I understand I can buy an external one which will work, but my question is - if her photos are on disc, would she be able to transfer them by external CDrom to her new laptop easily?

Yes, no problem, though if you're transferring from one version of Windows to another, you may find it easier to connect the two together via a network and use the built in Settings and Files Transfer Wizard to do it for you.
I bought an external Samsung USB CD/DVD writer for £20 recently from ebuyer - it works fine and seems well made.0 -
thanks, her own laptop is on windows 7, and so is the replacement I'm looking at.0

Ah Ok, in Win7 it's Accessories, System Tools, Windows Easy Transfer. It can do a lot more than just transfer picture files.
If they are not already on a network, you can buy a cheap LAN crossover cable to do the job provided (obviously) both have a network socket on them.0 -
that second paragraph is heading into the realms of double dutch for me :rotfl: - but as long as its do-able, thats fine.0
