But you don't seem to want to help yourself here.

I have asked twice now whether you have tried to clean the fire out yourself. You have either evaded or suggested that you shouldn't need to. That is in your opinion, If a manufacturer states it in the user instructions and it is not done, Who is at fault.

Yes I am a trader ( not online). If a retailer was giving you the brush off or duff information, I would tell you. It is just that you don't want to hear from anyone else, that you may be in the wrong.

If your other 2 fires in the past 20 years have been what is known as outset fires, eg
    http://www.valor.co.uk/2008.htm
    or
    http://www.valor.co.uk/1999.htm

Then you are correct, you wouldn't need to really do anything apart froma quick dust and polish every now and again.

If your fire is like this,
    http://www.valor.co.uk/1999.htm

Then you would be expected to clean it out every few months, as it states in the installer/user guide.

You are getting yourself upset and annoyed over something which is no one elses fault apart from your own.

I would suggest that you contact the retailer again and ask him to come out. I am trying to help you here, I am not having a 'pop' at you. You seem to not want to hear from anyone else who doesn't agree with you. I have been selling gas fires for 20+ years now and do know what can go wrong with them. It sounds to me that it needs cleaning out and that is your responsibility, no one elses. If after you clean it out, you still find it not working, ring Valor customer services on 0845 601 5111, give them all the details and they will callout and try and sort it. If it is user error, or incorrect installation, you may get hit with a bill.

You do not have any right for an automatic refund or replacement, unless you can prove it was faulty from day of fitting.

Work with the people concerened here, don't block them out. They will try and help you if you let them

To Prove what it says, taken from owners guide of valor pebble fire.

Ceramic fuel effect and rear wall.
    • This product uses fuel effect pieces and burner compartment rear wall containing Refractory Ceramic Fibres (RCF), which are man-made vitreous silicate fibres. Excessive exposure to this material may cause irritation to eyes, skin and respiratory tract. Consequently, it is important to take care when handling these articles to ensure that the release of dust is kept to a minimum.
    • Light coatings of soot will usually be burnt off during the normal operation of the fire.
    • Should any soot accumulation become excessive, the fuel effect pieces and walls should be removed from the fire for cleaning.
    • Cleaning should be carried out in a well ventilated area or in the open air by gently brushing with the pieces held away from your face so that you avoid inhaling the dust.
    • We suggest that you remove the ceramic fuel effect pieces in the reverse order to that shown in the fuel bed refitting instructions.

    Burner.
    • The burner surface can be carefully cleaned to remove any loose particles after taking off the ceramic fuel effect pieces. Make sure that no particles are pushed into the burner holes.

Arcon, am I right that you would have to have an independant report done first, before cliaming for a refund? Just checking

No, always best to try deal with it amicably before spending money on a report. Only then get a report and give the retailer the opportunity to offer a remedy, not necessarily a refund. As unless they have admitted liability a judge or the CC company would be looking for this info.

I would do as you've already suggested
I would suggest that you contact the retailer again and ask him to come out.

Dealer is not Gas Safe registered and his Son who is will be back tomorrow.
Dealer who was Corgi Registered states he cannot touch the fire so why can I?
My last fire was also slimline inset and changed as switch gave up working.
I will not keep a fire that would appear to go wrong so easily.
I am not trying to get something for nothing so have decided to purchase a more stable fire from another Company and learn from my bad experience.

You're unlikely to get a refund (even a partial one) by not allowing them the opportunity to repair it you know (assuming the cause isn't misuse)......

    Because it is your appliance.

You do not need to be Gas Safe registered to work on your own fire.

You do need to be Gas Safe registered if you are working on a customer's appliance.

So, not only can you, but you should carry out those actions required of you detailed in the user guide.

You shouldn't really get billed from Gas safe as far as I know.

However Gas safe are a weird entity.

I have had a couple of customers report me in the past. One was found to be that the fire was correctly installed, user using it wrong and the other when they went out to it, was an electric fire ! :rotfl:I was going to tell the inspector that it was electric, but he was a snotty sod on the phone and thought It would cheer my day up seeing his face at the customers house !

Gas safe are good in some ways, but they do have a tendency in acting like another engineer going out to someones work and finding fault where there isn't any. They will complain if yu use the wrong type of rawl plug when fitting the fire, or other petty things which have no bearing on the fault they are going to check for.
