    You haven't had insurance refused.

If your current insurer had refused to insure you they would have cancelled your insurance there and then, and asked you to send back your certificate of motor insurance.

What the insurer is doing is telling you is that they don't want any new business from you.

    That is completely different.

It's like if my current car insurer decides they won't offer me a renewal because the area I live is now somewhere they don't offer to insure people in.

BTW I think CIS and Nationwide car insurance is underwritten by LV.

And due to my recent troubles with CIS I would never buy any insurance product though them. Luckily the underwriter in my case, Aviva, who had nothing to do with the misselling of the product sorted the issue out. (And yes it was misselling as an ombudsman got involved as I wasn't allowed to talk to Aviva directly.)

Just to to advise, CIS underwrites their own insurance and LV does underwrite Nationwide Car Insurance.

Some strange advice given here IMO.

How could the non-renewing insurer tell the OP whether the non-invite is disclosable? Only a new insurer could confirm whether it is a material fact to them.

If an insurer asks whether a prior insurer has declined to renew, the answer is yes.

If one asks whether insurance has been refused or cancelled, the answer is no. No refusal because the OP didn't ask for renewal from them.

Just go to insurers in the future who don't ask about invitations to renew. Should be easy!

Yep, I agree and was wondering about the wisdom of some of the other responses.

OP....I think that tied in with the right to make complaints & have them dealt with properly etc is an implicit right not to be penalised for making complaints.

if the only reason they have refused renewal is because you have exercised your right to complain (and dummy quote will answer that) and that refusal has blighted your future insurance life then I'd stick another compliant in and refer it to the FOS if they don't undo it.

I don't agree. No company HAS to deal with an impossible customer. The right thing to do if the business relationship breaks down, is to suggest that the customer goes elsewhere at renewal.

There are many and varied reasons why insurers might do so, not all of which are a risk indicator. For example, you might be insured with an insurer who only insures over 50s, and have added a younger person onto your policy mid-term, and they might decide at renewal they don't want to cover that type of arrangement.
  • I think you should just change your insurance company. Time and money wasted in talking to them. Will give you grey hairs and nothing else. Doesn’t hurt the insurance company one bit.
