I've got a letter regarding Egg and they say that yes, an adjudicator was appointed right from the start, just like the Halifax one. In other worsd, the £500 fee has already been paid.

That was quick and unusual. In most cases, it sits in a queue awaiting an adjudicator for some time.
Shame, it appears that for me despite my fees being well under £500 they've decided to go this route, not as lucky as some it would appear...

Possibly indicates that they feel they have a strong enough case to put their foot down. There will also come a time when firms will take the higher cost and suffer the short term hit to prevent fraudulent and try-it-on complaints (Based on past issues where the try-it-ons started using certain complaint reasons knowing that they would be auto-paid out - up to that point).
