Pruning a cherry will invigorate it and make it put on a huge spurt of growth, both upwards with branches, but also underground - the roots spread out in search of nutrients to support the growth of new branches.

A fully qualified tree surgeon is the best person to advise you about the effect either of pruning or removing the tree.

Yes, I'm pretty sure the council would send someone round pretty quick, but I'm worried they would just chop it down without thinking about what it could do to our foundations, rather than actually assess the tree. Aside from that, I quite like the tree, I don't really want it cutting down if it doesn't have to be!

Most councils have qualified tree surgeons 'on the books' for tree-work/advice, and they are most unlikely to just chop the tree down without a full assessment from such a person.

fwor, I think our ground is clay but how could I find out for sure? Is there some map or something online?

If you google your county plus geology (e.g. Leicestershire geology) you'll get a number of sites showing the rocks/soil in your area.
