What's the best way to compress photos all at once?

I have around 20GB of 12MP photos on my computer. I'd like to take a copy of them and compress them all to a fraction of that size so I can upload them to my mobile phone. Can someone advise the easiest way to do it? Is there a free tool that someone can recommend?
I am using Windows 7 and I know it compresses photos when emailed, but I have so many in folders I'd just like to do them all at once.

Probably use Picasa to compress all in one go0

Is it possible to use Picasa to do that without it becoming the default photo viewer and loading the pictures online?0

IrfanView looks just what I need and I see it is highly regarded on CNet so I will try that. Thanks.0

+1 for Irfanview - excellent for the price, look under 'File' for the batch converter, select jpeg, look at the advanced options - plenty of options including watermarking, resizing, scaling, compression depth etc.0

Just to confirm, I used Irfan and it worked a treat. I was surprised how fast it was too. My 26.1GB photo collection is now copied and the copies total just 343MB, ideal for showing on a mobile phone.0
