My son opened an account with HSBC but before they had agreed his overdraft limit he wrote cheques that took him overdrawn, thinking the overdraft was automatic!!!

They have put hundreds of pounds on bank charges for returned cheques and this worried him so much he did not pay any of his wages into the account for dear of them taking the lot. Since then he has been paying an agreed £40 per month to discharge the overdraft and the fees. He would have paid the overdraft he believed he had when his pay cheque went in, but can he reclaim the charges they have put on him so that he can just pay the amount of the unauthorised overdraft?
