If someone punched and robbed my grandson leaving him in pain in a foreign land I'd expect him to get 7 years too, pity for rioters and thugs? Sorry I have none!:T

10 years for downloading illegal music
7 years for whatever this was
3-4 years (I think) for rape

This crime was particularly nasty and the press got on the bandwagon so it was always going to be a lengthy sentence!

Why is it ridiculous? they set up a facebook page to try to incite a riot. That in my opinion deserves punishment as it is a very stupid thing to do.

At the time there was a rumour some local yobs had starting rioting in my town, and people at my work were freaking out thinking it actually was happening.

As redpete says, those figures seem to have been carefully picked to make a point.

IIRC the ten years for "downloading illegal music" would actually be the maximum for criminal copyright infringement, which generally means making it available commercially, not just downloading the latest Britney Spears album.
Given that criminal copyright infringement can be a massive money maker it's a serious crime.

7 years for what was pretty much the epitone of aggrevated GBH with other (serious) considerations is about right, if anything it's a little low.

3-4 years for rape, as redpete says the average is much more (up to life from memory), but there are all sorts of factors that can affect the sentence - for example if both parties were drunk, no sign of force (I think Ken Clarke got slaughtered by opportunist idiots* in the other parties when he made the legally correct point, that there are different degrees of rape depending on a variety of factors, and thus the sentencing varies a lot).



*Given that some of the ones going for him after his comments, where supposedly trained lawyers, and either missed some important lessons in law school, or decided to ignore them for political reasons..

7 Years is peanuts for such a horrendous crime. I would have included 3 Years for Bicycle theft, and 5 Years per each punch he gave him. In some countries they would stone you to death for doing half the crime, he should count himself lucky he only got 7, he will be out in half that time.

Nobodies showing pity for the idiots, just discussing the sentences in comparison to other crimes.
