What about an LPG conversion. Buying one already converted is no doubt cheaper than buying one and getting it converted yourself.
  • I had an X-trail dci on hire for a while and it was amazing on fuel, better than a vectra 1.9 diesel. I have no idea how it managed it but it was great. If it wasn`t for the cheap feeling hard plastic dash and japanese style hard plastic loud clicky switches that are all too common in jap interiors I would have one in a second.

Fiat Panda? Suzuki 4x4? subaru forrester?

Most of the newer diesels will also run on a mix of veg oil and diesel - don't forget to declare it and pay the tax if you try this though ;-)

even the ravs are not that economical

subaru legacy/forester will probably be better tbh, unless you need 12"+ ground clearance

Russ, a 4x4 isn't really going to help you hugely in snow unless it has decent tyres (like mud tyres or just grippy winter tyres). You'd probably be better off just putting winter tyres on your current car for all the difference it'll make.

On ice, it doesnt matter what you're driving, you'll still end up in the hedge if you push it, a 4x4 is no use to you under those circumstances.

I have a landrover defender which is excellent offroad (as you'd expect), but my Wife has a skoda fabia which I put winter tyres on it when it snowed the first time this winter and despite us living in the country and having a foot of snow for nearly a month, she didn't miss a days work. So, have think before you rush into a 4x4 if it's just the weather that's the concern.

BigMike - thanks - i'm here reading this thread cos after losing a few days work this winter, frustrated, I was off to buy a 4x4 simply to get me through the snow and ice but after reading your post will probably just buy a set of winter tyres instead and put them on my main car, something that up to now just hadnt considered. You've probably jut saved me a couple of grand there so thanks very much!

Ditto thanks to BigMike - I've been looking at the Suzuki Jimny, as I was stranded at home last week in the snow. But then was disappointed to find that its more expensive to tax and insure, and less economical, than my 2.0l diesel Peugeot 206. Which I love. So am going to be having a chat with the local garage about winter tyres - thank you! :T
