Car accident and 50/50 outcome

Hi
I was involved in a car accident two years ago in July where it wasn't either person fault. It was on a blind bend and a minor bump. However it was more ecomical for the car to be scrapped than repaired. It was paid for ok by the insurers, however I had a excess of £300 to pay. I paid that, however it has taken until now to go to 50/50 so I thought I would get £150 back.
But every time I ring the insurers up they say it's still ongoing and that a 50/50 claim doesn't warrant any excess back. Is this correct?.

Thanks for your time
