Newly trained teachers...ever wondered why you bothered?

Hello,

I have recently qualified as a primary school teacher and am having a hard time finding a job. I am in the SW and they are hard to come by. I am beginning to wonder why I bothered doing my PGCE....seems like ot was for nothing. Have been doing supply, but that is not enough to live off at the mo.

Anyone else in a similar situation?

Good luck with it all-do you have a job lined up in septmeber? or have you applied to many jobs?
  • In Scotland it is quite good as we are guaranteed a years 'probation' where we teach 70% and are on full pay, to gain experience and still have a little eye on us - is there nothing like that there?

Someone was also telling me the course is only 3 years in Wales, its 4 here, is that true?

In Scotland the situation is usually good in probation. A lot of the probationers get a temporary contract the year after as the councils have to do paperwork about the amount of their probations who go on to get work. Thereafter it gets more difficult. There are still jobs around, but there are a lot of teacher's chasing the good ones.

I do like the Scottish system-seems like a good way to do it. I truly wish there was a system like that in the rest of the UK.

There are 2 types of degrees you can do, either a 3 or 4 yr course both in England and in Wales. I did my undergraduate degree (3yrs) and then did a 1yr postgraduate (a PGCE).
  • hi all :) ... my friend plans to start a primary pgce later this year .. would you be willing to answer a few questions for her.

    1. On average how many hours per day did you spend teaching.
    2. On average how many hours per day did you spend on written work.
    3. Was the work more difficult than you expected.
    4. Do you regret starting the pgce.
    5. Would it be possible to have a p/t job while doing the pgce.

    Many thanks

I was forced out of my first job because of my disability but am now back in teaching, doing supply at a school where I will have a more permanent post at come Easter. I am getting a good rate with my supply agency so maybe it is worth signing up to a good few of them.... some of them take a bigger chunk of your pay than others.

I went into secondary because I knew that there was a lack of jobs in primary schools, particularly in the SE.

If you want to chat about it more, please pm me :)

There's been a huge recruitment push over the last few years, and it looks like the cake was over-egged as the market is now flooded in many areas. Most nqts I know are either in temp jobs or working as nursery nurses or TAs. But many teachers are leaving/retiring earlier as they become increasingly disillusioned, so hang in there! :D
