Cash for Old books

Options
Hi

I've recently been trying to declutter the house and have boxes of old books we have no interest in anymore, so I'm keen to maybe get some money for them.

I've never really sold anything before so am a little clueless as where to start...

My first idea is to take them to a car boot sale with other things, but I know there are websites to sell cd's and dvd's etc so is there anything for books?

After a google search I came across fatbrain.co.uk has anyone heard of them before and actually received money from them? I'm a bit dubious about sending my books off and never receiving any money.

Any other suggestions would be fantastic!

I haven't used them before but have seen them recommended on the MSE forums : zapper.co.uk x

I recently used We Buy Books and Zapper for the first time. Basically pulled up both websites, entered the barcodes for the books and whomever offered me the most, I put it in the package to them.
We Buy Books had the cheque out to me within 1 week. Zapper took longer but both companies paid up in full.

Price differences were quite big e.g. Churchill by Himself (Autobiography), We Buy Books offered £2.63 and Zapper only £0.47

Postage is free so, I would highly recommend either over trying to sell them on Ebay.
  • As above try zapper and webuybooks if you just want a little something - I've sold books to both of them.
In my experience zapper accept more, although webuybooks tend to pay more on certain book genre's so it's worth checking each book on both sites.
Webuybooks pay nice and quickly via bank transfer whereas zapper tends to be about 3 weeks for a cheque to arrive.

Both of them pay derisory sums.

I imagine they try to sell them for about 10x more!

To find any more valuable ones have a search on Amazon using the ISBN or barcode numbers in the search box. You may be surprised at the value of some. It's easy enough to set up an Amazon account and doesn't cost anything to list them.

The sites mentioned above are most likely selling them any worthwhile ones on Amazon, the other recyclers will generally only offer pennies.

  • I'd rather sell a book to one of them for 30p than attempt to sell it among throngs of others on ebay for 99p. Of course there will be some that are worth trying to sell privately.

  • I use www.greenmetropolis.com

    www.zapper.com wasn't working today

www.webuybooks.com offered me 99p for a £45 textbook and other ridiculous sums.
