Skoda Yeti Advice re 1st service

Can anyone tell me if it would be ok to use a local garage for my car's 1st service or am I best booking it in with the dealer? TIA.

They need to be VAT registered and use OEM or prove it is equivalent parts to keep the warrenty up.

I'd be tempted to buy all the bits from Skoda (and keep the reciept) then pay an independent to fit them (again keeping the reciepts just in case you need to claim later)

Hi there,
It's really up to you, it is normally cheaper at a local Garage and they can stamp your service book just like the main dealer.
If you want, you could call your main dealer and ask what they recommend for the first service and price, then call your local garage and ask them to quote for the same work. Then you can make an educated decision on where to go.

I found my dealer was a similar price to the local independent.

Before going to an independent, I'd recommending ringing around the dealers - you may well find one of them doing it cheaper.

Car warranty is not conditional on having the oil changed or other car services only in authorised garages, you can take your car to any independent garage - this is the law. However, as Fivetide mentioned, parts need to be OEM quality. Thankfully standard 1st service requires only a few service parts (filters and oil) so there is absolutely no reason to use cheap substitutes.

First check how much your local independent would charge for the service, based on the service requirements listed in the owners manual/service book. Don't bother with any Gold/Silver/Platinum type service - the owners handbook lists the requirements, nothing more and nothing less.

Then check how much your dealer would charge. Some may charge three times as much as an independent, some may charge less.

i suggest you go to dealer for this just in case theres any recalls off the track and any flash updates etc
remember if its something they dont want leaking out to say the press they will do these things and not even tell the customer they did them

Personally I go main dealer while in warranty, you may save going elsewhere but the main dealer aint going to help when the engine gives up after 3 years and a day.

I do too. You know recalls have been done. The dealer isn't able to argue the toss over the servicing if there is a warranty problem. I just don't see the point in spending thousands on a new car and then taking a chance to save peanuts.

Also consider trying to resell the car in 3 years. A 3 year old car with full main dealer stamps will get more than a car with 3 local independent stamps. After 3 years that gap reduces a lot but first 2 services I would use main dealer - Also there may be outstanding recalls on your car - You wouldnt know about these unless they were safety related. Only a main dealer would be able to determine this as they would run a service requirement by your number plate or vin number (not just the standard service guide).

Again any problem such as above would be picked up 90% of the time in the first year.

Also shop around - main dealers realise people are deserting them on mass after year 2 or 3 so many now offer special deals for older cars to compete with the independents.
