It might just be an old installation of windows that's the issue, has windows been installed for 3 years as well? I don't think I've ever managed to keep an install going that long! Do you run defrag and scandisk?

Using a drive copying program does save a bit of time and makes the process easier but you never know when it will fail, if it fails during the transfer process then the data will be lost, its always better to copy the stuff you want off than risk loosing it. make a backup to cd/dvd then if you want to copy the drive then go ahead.

If he uses disk imaging it takes an image of the original disk, it doesn't delete anything, you still have the original disk plus an image of it that you can use to restore from.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

I know I have used ghost and drive image for years but the process of createing the image (reading the drive) could be the final straw, I would copy the docs/pictures first then if you want all the software etc to go over then do the imageing thing. the other thing is that imageing a failing drive is very hit and miss it doesnt always work.
  • Threadstarter could perhaps run S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics. OP is a bit vague on symptoms other than PC running slow. Could be a myriad of other causes.
