Why not move to VB 4?

I've seen a few VB 3.8 sites get hacked recently. I don't think its as secure.

You 'don't think' it's as secure. Not looked into it, but any proof, apart from a suspicion ?
As to migration, they get enough stick when it's down for maintenance for short periods, I dread to think what the whining would be if they were down for a while to migrate the site to v4.

Would it have to go down? Can't you install v4 on some other space, copy the data across then when it's tested and tweaked and ready for use take down this one and put the v4 online. Or doesn't it work like that. Are they incompatible so you can't just copy data across. Or not without an immensity of fiddling about.

Yes, I s'pose a reasonable guess is that maybe lots or even nearly everything would have to be reformatted and mucked about with to make it sit down. What a bore. And probably a huge cost and hundreds of hours of work. What a pain.

The reason new version are released is to fix security issues that have appeared in older version, so MSE should update the software as and when new releases become available.

The upgrade of a forum takes approximately 20 minutes which could be done during the night when they normally do updates anyway.

    As for the money.....
Guides are written purely from a 'what's the best way to save money?' stance. Yet, once they're finished one of the team has the job to see if any 'affiliate links' to the top products can be found.

So that's how MSE make their money. They use affiliate links.

Dont VB work with MSE to tweak the site, what with it being on of their largest sites, its workinig, and probably customised a lot behind the scenes.

Moving to a new system, would involve massive risk, unknowns and problems - far better to let others find out those problems, and move over in due course when its been fully investigated.

It is a reasonably large forum this, so any problem that would just inconvienence a typical size forum would be massive for a site this big.

NASA does the same, they dont allow new techonology up in space, only things that are a few years old - so they are known to be reliable, tried and tested.

The impact of this is to stigmatise people on benefits,
and we should be deeply worried about that

    News just in....

    ...Titanic sinks.

Perhaps you should try reading the "How this site is financed" page?

It's not a charity, has never purported to be. It is however a useful site for many people, with no requirement for users to generate any income for the site at all.

Rather than slating me you'll see that someone asked how MSE made money. I answered them.
