Argos' questionable pricing

Hi. My fridge/freezer is suffering from a serious state of deadness. So I looked on the Argos site for a replacement. I found a Bush fridge/freezer I like the look of. However, it appears on the site twice. 486/8956 for £249.99 and 486/8963 for £269.98. I spoke to Argos and they said the only difference is that the higer priced one includes express delivery. Howerver it clearly says that it is free delivery! I feel that I should therefore be entitled to get free express delivery at the lower price. Argos disagree. Can anyone tell me if I am right? Thanks.

Cant see the problem here, when I put the cheaper one in it states delivery is £8.95 and at least 3 days delivery.
The dearer one is free express delivery.
Even although the product is the same it's two different packages, either take the cheaper, slower delivery or the dearer faster delivery. There is nothing wrong or misleading about either of these.

There is no such thing as a free lunch. Or free delivery. This is probably the oldest trick in the book. Or Argos catalogue.
The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life. :)

Argos don't have to sell you anything, so you either take which one you like or don't bother - it's no skin of their nose as you're a tiny drop in the ocean compared to the amount of things they sell every day.

Next day delivery costs an extra £11.
They could either say that, or load up 2 items. Same net results :)

It might well be that the cheaper priced item is coming directly from Argos and might be held in their warehouse, and the higher priced item could be getting delivered directly from the manufacturer and is costing more than when Argos bought their stock.
  • Maybe, although it is a moot point as they can sell anything at any price to anyone they choose (or not to).

The pricing strategy is undoubtedly questionable. It's worked like that to entice you by the 'free express delivery' promotion when in fact it's no free - they have just added the price on it!

Saying that, if anybody actually thinks free delivery is actually "free" or if when you buy one get one free then that is actually the case, then you need to wake up to the real world. All you need to do is work around Tesco is see the same product in different positions with different promotions 'two for £x' 'BOGOF' etc etc.

    It's business.

As a consumer you need to see through the spin they are feeding you, look for the best price and make your decision accordingly.

Thanks for your comments and views.

I stil think there's something seriously wrong when you have the same product advertised at two different prices, when they say that the higher price includes delivery, but it clearly states the it's free delivery.

Maybe I'll contact consumer direct for their views.

Try the ASA (asa.org.uk) - I'd say it is questionable as 'free' has to mean 'free'
