Weight baggage allowance 15kg

Hi

I just found out today that some airlines are only allowing you 15kg instead of your normal 20kg. I double checked with Thomson travel who said it's only 15kg when you do late deals. Also know that First Choice have the same policy, so i advise you all to check before you pack.

I know it's not exactly 'moneysaving', but with a lot of of the tour ops airlines, you have the option to prebook an additional 5kg allowance.

Yeah and the allowance is chargable, its a new thing they brought out just after christmas. It is money saving as if some poor people turn up with 20kg instead of 15kg they'll be charged. Its to let people know who don't already know.

Especially when you have an infant and have to squeeze all their things in amongst yours, the weight just goes up and up.

Two points:

(1) this restriction on late deals has been the case for quite a few years;
(2) if you are travelling with a cheap airline with an infant, it may often be worth paying for a seat for the infant PURELY for the luggage allowance. As a bonus, if the baby goes to sleep you can put them on their own seat rather than having to hold them for hours.

I've just booked a holiday with thomascook.com and the extra 5kgs is £20 per person if you book it there and then. If not then this price goes up if you want to book it afterwards.

Yes, Thomson and First Choice have been at 15kg on lates and allocate on arrival for a long time, MyTravel are normally 20kg for lates, never done AoA with them.

I saw this week that Thomson have 15kgs - even is going away for 2 weeks! We went with Virgin and their allowance is 23kg with 2 cases to the US and if one case you can have up to 30kgs. OK going out but what about coming bck with souviners - that put the weight up on ours.

It is interesting, blue_monkey, that none of the package companies give you a greater luggage allowance if you are going for longer - even though they are obviously making more money out of a longer holiday. It's very annoying.

We always fly for 2 weeks away and we struggled with 15kg allowances even before we had a baby. Now it's completely out of the question which is why we book her a seat.

Fortunately for the next holiday the flights are under £55 return so it's well worth paying for a third seat and getting extra luggage allowance and space on the plane.

Another strange bit of logic is that, for package holidays which include free child places, you CANNOT use a free child space for a baby and consequently have to pay £29 (or so) for the pleasure of NO seat and NO luggage allowance. Whereas if the child was over 2, they could fly for free and holiday for free, with full luggage allowance. D'oh!

Hmm, actually we went into a TA this weekend and mentioned the luggage allowance on Thompson was pants and was told everyone had the same policy. We said that Virgin allows 23kg and 2 cases each to USA and I was toldthat it had changed a few months back and was now 15kgs. I said no, this was wrong, we had just come back and our allowance was - and it was in the literature - 2 x cases up to 23kgs each. She said it must have been a good few months back and I said no, we had just come back, we went out with 5 cases, came back with 6 and on the way back they were not even weight despite us using the expantion on them to cram all our new goodies and souviniers in. We had 4 seats so could have had 8 cases each up to 23 kgs each. The brochure still says the same baggage allowance for holidays ending 2007 as well.
