My uncle recently passed away and the widow has asked me to help her sort out the sale of the car.

It's my uncle's name on the car paperwork and I am not really sure how I sell it because suppose a sale is agreed..the paperwork has to be signed under his name.

A friend has said that DVLA will accept my signature with a covering letter to explain the situation when the car is sold :-s

Appreciate if one of you guys can shed any light on the best to do this please

Many thanks

Get the executor of his estate to sign the V5C. Under the signature write "Executor of". That is all you need to do, it is very common and the DVLA probably don't even check the signatures anyway.

The only thing I could add to the above is to simply apply for the V5 (post office have a form). If uncontested (which it will be) you'll get a new log book in your name.

Why add an extra keeper to the car when there is no reason?

Er... because it might be easier? I said it as an alternative, nothing more. A buyer might be suspicious and not know the system (the OP doesn't after all)

Having a V5 in their name may help reassure a potential buyer, besides it's hardly going to be an issue is it when the OP explains the story.

I purchased my car from a lady who's husband had died, all I got her to do was to sign the logbokk in HER name and to send a covering letter along with the v5 stating that her husband had died and had sold the car to me,no probs

  • We've recently had to transfer 3 vehicles to my Mom after my Dad died. To transfer the vehicle over we filled in the new keeper details and then sent the log books with a covering letter explaining the situation to the sensitive case team at the DVLA. It was all resolved within 10 days.
