Red funnel have odd ticket prices. We went to Bestival last year (went over on a wednesday and came back on a monday) and by far the cheapest option was to buy 2 day returns and only use one leg of each. Singles were much more expensive

For future bookings try fiddling around with the times.
We camped over on the Island a couple of summers ago and weirdly it was much cheaper to go over Friday eve return 9 days later Sunday lunch times. it even worked out cheaper this way after paying for the two extra nights pitch.

I'm sure someone once told me that the cost per mile of the Lymington to Yarmouth ferry was more than that of the space shuttle to the Moon.
