Maximum tuition fees for students starting university next year will remain at £9,000, ministers announced today.
Maintenance grants for poorer students will rise in line with inflation, while loans for living costs for other students will stay
at this year’s level, Business Secretary Vince Cable said.

Government plans to freeze student grants and loans for 2013 have come under fire from union leaders who warned that undergraduates do not have enough money to live on.
Ministers announced that university grants and loans for living costs in 2013/14 will be kept at the same level as this year.
Tuition fees, and loans to cover them will also remain at this year's levels, the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills said.
But Liam Burns, president of the National Union of Students (NUS), said there was "nothing here for us to be celebrating".He said "radical action" was needed to deal with the problem, adding that grants and loans for living costs are not keeping up with inflation.
He said that there had been much talk about how higher tuition fees should not put students off going to university, adding "what definitely will is if they don't have enough money while they study".

http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/story.asp?sectioncode=26&storycode=419296&c=1Fee cap frozen for English universities
The maximum tuition fees that can be charged by universities in England are to be frozen at £9,000 for the 2013-14 academic year, the government has announced.
Unveiling the student finance arrangements for the second year of the new fees regime, the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills said that fees would be maintained at 2012-13 levels.
This means that universities will not be able to increase charges in line with inflation, which was running at 3.6 per cent in January, forcing them to absorb rising costs. The move signals a departure from previous years when top-up fees rose steadily (from £3,000 in 2005 to this year’s maximum charge of £3,375).
Allowing universities to increase £9,000-a-year fees in line with the current inflation rate would have yielded an extra £324 per student in 2013-14 – or an income of £3.24 million per 10,000 students.0 -
Excellent news.
Even a rise of 3% on £9k tuition fees is a large amount.
I have to say I don't really agree with the NUS in saying that student support is too low though. For those with low household income it's very generous especially when combined with University support. For those with high household income, of course it's down to Bank of M&D.
I'd prefer to see everyone brought in line with the average, but I think living on the current maintenance grant/loan is fairly easy.Said Aristippus, “If you would learn to be subservient to the king you would not have to live on lentils.”
Said Diogenes, “Learn to live on lentils and you will not have to be subservient to the king.”0 -
It's almost as if the NUS don't realise a lot of actual workers have had pay freezes for years.0
