Well it was bonus and payrise day at work which has prompted me to decide to apply for a new job so instead of doing any actual work I engaged in a bit of pondering.
For no obvious reason, the following scenario popped into my head.
Ignoring the practicalities, imagine every bank computer and back up was destroyed leaving no record of electronic money. Land Reg etc records are also destroyed so nobody knows for sure who owns shares, bonds etc.
You'd have physical assets and cash money left. What would be the 'fairest' or 'best' way to resolve the situation? The 2 aren't necessarily the same thing of course.
Would you split everything evenly between people? Favour old people because they don't have time to make up the money? What about borders, would I have a claim on assets in countries other than where I live or am a citizen of?
Happy naval gazing!

I think what happens is the person who controls the most firepower gets the lot.0 -
Effectively what happened in Germany after the hyper-inflation in the 20s I guess?0

No naval gazing required.
The balance of power has just shifted to those willing and strong enough to bludgeon you to death and take what is yours.1. The house price crash will begin.
2. There will be a dead cat bounce.
3. The second leg down will commence.
4. I will buy your house for a song.0 -

I suspect that this is broadly speaking what would happen. The legal bods would talk about 'possessory title', but basically if you can demonstrate you own it (with occupation or ultimately force, legal or otherwise) then how can anyone contest such a claim?
It's funny to think how all this bureaucracy is basically the thin manila-envelope line between London and Mogadishu.
I assume in your hypothetical example records are destroyed but all systems are functioning, so it's not pure rule of the gun?0 -

Yes, good question BTW.
Government, legal system all functioning only without records. No mass deaths or injuries etc., just the records are all gone as to who owns what.
The solar storm thing on the BBC website got me thinking.0 -
Is this a very good reason not to move to 'paperless statements'?
