Gas supply

Gas supply
I need heeeelllllpp!
I am currently with British Gas for my gas + electricity. Last Sept I got a call from them asking why I was leaving, I told them I didn't know I was, but they assured me I had changed to Eon. I was asked if I wanted to return to British Gas and I agreed. In Jan this year I received an Email asking for my meter reading. My electricity reading went through fine but my gas reading wasn't accepted and I was asked to contact my supplier. When I phoned BG I was told that I had moved to Eon again back in Oct and I had to ring them with my reading. By this time I was very annoyed with Eon so I rang them to ask why they keep doing this without my permission. Eon couldn't find any record of me and that I had to ring BG back and tell them they had this wrong. After almost 2 hours of phonecalls to and from each supplier I told Eon that I wasn't bothered who was supplying my gas and that one of them was and I wasn't paying so I wwas happy. This didn't go down very well and they finally searched with my meter number only to find that they had been asked by a lady with a similar address to me and same postcode to supply her gas and they had taken over mine by mistake. They appologised and told me they would transfer me back to BG and I wouldn't be charged for the gas I'd used. I have just received a bill from BG for £250 for this period so I phoned them to ask why. I was told that they had to bill me from my last meter reading and as Eon hadn't taken a reading to say what they had supplied I had to pay them for this or ring Eon back. I have phoned Eon who cannot find my account with them BECAUSE I NEVER HAD AN ACCOUNT IN MY NAME WITH THEM. Can you help me and do I have any rights to refuse to pay for this.

    Did you go at all?

If not you should be transferred back as is and the most that normally happens is. A unit advance to the reading to my knowledge, but I'm less in the know on gas.

Anyway, if Bgas know you have never left on each occasion, the just need to bill you up to date and forget what's in between really. How they do this may include opening a new account hence what are the opening/closing readings the are using? Ask them about this, where its coming from, etc. This might shed some light, but its difficult to say more without understanding the transfer readings and if you were pulled back each time with only one day added, hence no real gap where you were with Eon.

Understand your annoyance - 'Erroneous' transfers are an Industry problem, not yours, but when it happens it's the customer who has to do the running around to sort it out.

That said, BG are quite rightly billing you for the Gas you used during this mix-up period, but the meter read they are billing you for should start from the End Reading on the last bill you had from BG, and run up to what you meter reads now - If they have issued the bill on an Estimated reading, check that it's close to your actual meter reading, and if not reject the bill and demand one based on your actual reading

Also check that they are chargeing the bill on the same tariff that you were on, as it's possible they might treat your 'return' as a new account and bill on
    their expensive Standard rate

A September through to March Gas bill will be expensive, but if paying it all in one go is a problem, get on to BG and negotiate payment over a period, which in these circumstances they will agree to
  • :mad:This was by no means my fault but I am now left with a £250 bill from this period and a new bill of around the same, all together I am now £500 in debt. I have a good mind to offer £5 per week to settle the bill and go to another provider all together, after all I didn't have to ring around to sort this and wished I hadn't. No one would have known as the other address would have been giving their reading and paying the bill, hence frre gas for me.

No, its not your fault. Erroneous transfers are very common and very frustrating, especially since you fix and it happens again because someone such as your neighbour is getting the mpan/mprns mixed up. Addresses can get changed to compound the areas making it more difficult when you raises it.

Without more information, its just possible to understand where these bills are coming from. Need to know about dates, readings, etc as it should only follow on as you never went. All i can tell is that these bill values are unusual to you but can't seen why. I can only say to make these checks and ensure it appears seamless.
