Key and card meter for gas & electric
My fiance and I have just moved in to our new rented property. Upon moving in we discovered our electric and gas were key and card top up. How do people find this? Personally it doesn't bother me and I'd rather know where I am and be able to budget for it. My fiance has been on it before and doesn't like it, whereas I haven't. I'm hoping it also makes him a bit more energy efficient as in our previous poperty when we were on monthly DD he was forever leaving lights on and laptop and phone chargers turned on. We are thinking of putting £50 on each and seeing how we go with it...

The first thing you must do is contact the supplier and get your own device, dont use any key/card left behind by old tenant.
The costs are about the same as the standard pay on bill credit tariff. Some supplliers (BG and SPOW I think) offer a home vend unit that means you dont need to go to the shop to top up.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

British Gas have sent us a new card but have heard nothing about the electric key. Is there a reason why we need our own one? Is it incase of arrears? Sorry I don't quite understand the workings of itDebt free of CC by 2nd March 2013

Yeah, you need new keys/cards so that it wipes your meter down and you aren't paying an old debt or charge on the meter.0
