comparing costs on energy switching sites
I have entered my details on a few switching websites now, and each one comes up with NPower GoFix11 being the cheapest based on my annual consumption. They are not the cheapest by far for standing charge plus unit cost, but they make up for this for a £100+ discount if you go with them by direct debit for 12 months. The headline cost includes this discount.
However, this fix is for 14 months and not 12, so you really have to apply the discount over the full 14 months in order to get a true cost fuel - and then compare against other offers over the same period. I guess that if you stayed with them for another 10 months you would get another £100, but who knows what rate you'd be on after the initial fix. So this means for me that they're not the cheapest at all. They give you a discount, and then probably tempt you with a further discount by staying with them for a bit longer.. and before you know it you're spending more money with the thought of saving more.
Thank the lord for Excel eh.

No, thank the Lord for comparison websites!
It is vitually impossible to keep up with ever changing 70+ tariffs available from companies.
Each have different discounts(dual fuel - payment method - loyalty bonus etc), different tier1 quantities, etc etc.
The comparison websites do all this for you; however you need to understand the conditions, as you have done with NPower0
