I have a Canon G12 digital camera and have on it some bits of video footage I took on holiday. I want to grab some individual images from some of this footage to make into photos. How do I do this?

Use LightWorks for free. Obviously it's no Sony Vegas Pro but will do what you ask for.0

All video editing software has a snapshot tool that I have seen. So Microsoft Movie Maker or Apple iMovie can do this without additional software.
See http://www.windowsmoviemakers.net/Tutorials/HowToTakeSnapShot.aspx how how to use Movie Maker0 -
Hello,
Give AVIDemux a try. It's free, can load nearly any video and you just scroll along to the frame you want and click File -> Save -> Save JPEG
