Loose change

Went to bank on an errand for someone else and took about £70 of tea money.

I bagged up what I could but for instance £5s worth of 5ps are an awful lot of 5ps so didn't have enough to make up the £5. The same problem with 10ps and 20ps.

I was told they wouldn't accept the loose change, it had to be all bagged up plus they would only accept 5 bags at a time. I asked what I was supposed to do with extra money (there was alot of it and it was heavy) she just said they can't accept it, even though it was being paid into one of their accounts.

Luckily I went to buy a handbag and the shop agreed to take payment of £20 in small change so I got rid of most of it then had another trip to the bank to pay that in (they kindly accept £20 notes).

I just wonder what other people do who take payments for such things like this.

My local TSB is much more accomodating when I bring in the kids baggies.

and if I don't have enough 5ps or 10ps etc I do a seperate transaction forst and ASK for the amt of change required to make a full bag lol.

There are some machines that do this, but some charge a fee so look out for that.

I think someone reported on here that self-service tills in tesco let you feed in as much loose change as you want, and if you pay too much it will gave change in notes. So effectively converting to notes for free.

    Thanks for the tip

Another thing re. my trip to Santander. She weighed my full bag of 20p and told me there was only £8 in there not £10. I said I had counted it all out and there was definately £10.

She got them out and counted them and confirmed there was indeed £10. So what's going on there? Scales out of calibration or some sort of fiddle going on?
  • Natwest have one of those machines where you just pour it all in and its counts it up. Just like the ones in the supermarket but without the massive charges!
