In probably the largest tyre test of its type, the German magazine Auto Bild have tested 50 leading tyres in both dry and wet braking.

Highlighting the difference in 225/45 R17 tyres, the best tyre (Nokian Z G2
) stopped in just 44 meters in the wet from 100kph, while the worst tyre on test, the Rockstone F105, required nearly 28 metres further to stop at 71.7 metres! The Nokians wet braking distance was only a little longer than the worse dry braking score, at 42 metres for the Runway.

Useful tool, but not by any means the full story. The Dunlop Sportmaxx, which will spin you 360 on a "normal" wet roundabout scores highly?

I have Dunlops (not Sportmaxx) fitted to the Crabmobile - where did you see the comment about spinning on a roundabout? :o

P.S: I realise this isn't an exhaustive test, but there have been quite a few threads on here recently about tyres.

It is interesting how some supposed "ditchfinders" from these forums have outperformed some premium brands although some are rightly where they belong.

Goodyear F1s may come near the top, but after having a pair which lasted 8,000 miles they won't be my tyre of choice again.

They need a column for wear too. No point having tyres that stop on a sixpence if you have to replace them twice a year!

Still interesting reading and a good base to start your research.

ADAC tyre test reports include wear stats.

Crabman there isn't a comment I can see about those dreadful tyres, I've first hand, empirical evidence of a brilliantly handling Jag XF (in the dry) turning into an ice rink special on a reasonably fast roundabout in the rain. A true Jekyll and Hyde change.

    Depends how much they cost.

Personally I'd like to see a price-performance-wear comparison to see where the tyres really sit in relation to each other.

These Shandong-Yongsheng tyres (Autogrip/Minerva/Rockstone/Rotalla and others -- F10x) are really getting an unenviable reputation! They do however wear really, really well (rock-hard compound presumably designed for hot countries), and I know a fair few cab firms around here are using them.

It would seem to me on those scores that any tyre in the top 30 or so is probably OK -- near enough as good as the typical mid-ranger.

They're high performance tyres, designed for grip, not longevity.

And I've got a set on my current car which have lasted 25,000 miles, and the set on my old car were about half worn at 10,000 miles. Not horrfiic for the performance they offer.
