refusal of refund

Options
hello,

Just wondered if any body could shed some light on the situation.
My nan who is house bound wanted me to buy a Next gift card for my nieces birthday but it turns out it was the wrong shop she told me.
Not thinking I could do anything I rang the Customer services number - the girl told me she would check with a supervisor but she reckons it wouldnt be a problem. supervisor agreed as well so long as I had the receipt. just needed to take it back to the store.

As we didnt have much time (neices Brithday was yesterday) we got the orginal present that was asked for.

The store refused a refund as a gift card was non-refundable and that it was wrong of the customer services to tell me I could have a refund. The manger told me to phone customer services as they might be able to sort it out!
yesterday I phoned customer services and they told me they couldn't do it and had to go back into store.

I am now £50 out of pocket due to being told I could have a refund.

sorry its a bit long winded.

Many thanks

They don't legally have to give you a refund for an incorrectly purchased gift card. I'm not sure you could force them to honour the information given in the call - it would be good customer service to do so, but I don't think they will.

    Good luck, however.

Unfortunately it is likely that the T&Cs of their gift cards (which you accept, implicitly, when you purchase) mean that gift cards aren't refundable.

You could try e mailing or writing, stating that you were purchasing on behalf of an elderly relative and that you telephoned CS on (date) and were told you could have a refund. Maybe they will, in these exceptional circumstances, refund.

Having said that (and this is going to sound harsh) your Nan should take the £50 hit - she got you to buy the wrong thing in the first place.

Or try flogging it on e bay for £40?

I would just like to point out after Borders and other collapses I only give universal gift vouchers now, they are called money.

I bought my neice a gift voucher from the Post Office for xmas called 'one for all'

you can credit them with any amount of money and they are valid in loads of different shops/chains.

I too refuse to but a store-specific card anymore - for exactly the same reasons as Douglas

One for all is a company in its own right. As the provider of the cards, if they go under your gift card won't be accepted in any of the shops.

In fact, it is probably LESS safe than a store-specific gift card. At least when a store chain is in trouble you may get to hear about it on the news in advance. In the event of problems you probably wouldn't know anything about this company until they actually went under.

they sell very close to value on ebay. Or could you ask any friends if they would like it slightly cheaper or even use it to buy Birthday gifts for others?
