Audi automatic gearbox problem?
Hello
I was thinking of getting a second hand Audi.
But I have heard the automatic gear boxes can be a problem, and very expensive to fix.
Anyone have any real experiences of these automatic gearboxes. Considering A4 A6 A8
How would you be able to detect an early problem on a test drive?
Best regards
Bob

Any DSG/CVT box is useless and will fail. And cost loads to fix.
Quattro versions have different boxes and are better.0 -
The CVT multi-tronic gearboxes are not nicknamed multi-chronic for nothing!
Only get one if your happy to assume that you will have to repair / replace it at considerable cost at some point. The CVT auto box that you'll find in second hand Audi A4 & A6 are not related in any way to the DSG auto boxes and are not used in other VAG group cars.
The auto box used in the A8 is different, its a traditional auto box but still considered the weak point on the car and potentially very expensive to fix0 -
Thanks for the replies, really helpful.
Having never owned an Audi (and I may sound a bit thick), I wouldn’t really understand/know my DSG from my CVT, multi-tronic, etc. So, a few more questions if I may:-
1) On a test drive (sitting in the car), can I tell what type of auto box it is by just looking at the gear stick? Photo’s would be appreciated, if possible
2) Is it best to avoid an Audi auto? I thought Audi’s were meant to be reliable.
3) Are any Audi’s with Auto-boxes reliable. Year of car and models would be appreciated.
4) What is the difference between dsg, cvt, trip-tronic, multi-tronic. Advantages/disadvantages.
Thanks

Guy I know runs a 1973 Ford Cortina 2l Auto, 317,000 miles, same auto box from when it was built.
What ever happened to the manual kickdown cogs and teeth boxes ?Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
As with others i would recommend avoiding CVT boxes and any DSG prior to 2008.0

Everyone i've known with an Audi auto outside of warranty has ended up digging deep into their pockets and then shifted the things on before more shelling out to be done, all years and models.0

Do you really think I'd waste time spamming forums? It's pretty lame to even say that when I was only trying to help.0
