What is everyone doing? i have bought cake boxes for the cake to go in and be left on a table for people to take when they leave but ive heard that a few people cut it up and leave it on a table after the evening buffet.im in two minds now as i dont want it left on the table for alot of it to be left there and wasted as im also doing a sweet buffet.a friend of mine had one of those cakes made out of chocolate and was cut up and left for guests to help themselves, she said 75% of it got chucked in the bin by the hotel staff
Im also thinking if its put in the cake boxes what doesnt get taken can be put in the fridge and will stay fresher than being left on a table to go stale

I think that you're right. Wedding cake is far to expensive to be thrown away! And of course fruit cakes can be saved for years.
No-one is going to want to eat wedding cake if there is a tempting sweet buffet, but a small portion is a nice reminder of the day. I would suggest working out how much - if any - you want to save, and then cutting upto 50% of the rest for guests as they leave. If there's extra demand, more can be cut to order, but I would definitely try to allocate this job to someone to minimise wastage.
In my family, nothing goes to waste. I have distant aunts that bring containers and will take anything that isn't nailed down, even before everyone has been served! They attended a wedding a few months ago and were seen to be sweeping the contents of the favours table (handmade chocolates) into supermarket carrier bags. Classy.Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

:rotfl: i would love to have seen that.
We are having a 3 tier, bottom being sponge and the top 2 being fruit,i guess i could say to the hotel staff cut half off the bottom up and half of the middle tier up and put it out and the rest put into the cake boxes, whatever isnt eaten within half hr take away and wrap it up,want to make sure i get a taste off both :rotfl:.we want to keep the top tier

For our wedding the staff will take the cakes and cut some up, put it on serving trays and take it round the tables and offer it to the guests, what's left from the cut cake is usually left with the buffet. The rest I will take home and take to work, give to ours/parents/grandparents neighbours that we know but did not invite.
Most weddings I have been to someone usually walks round the tables and offers cake out.
Our venue also put out polystyrene containers (like what you get from take-aways) so guests can take any buffet left home with them if they want. Although the way my family eat, there'll probably be nothing much left anyway.0 -
Lisajane thats a good idea for it to be taken around the tables, better than it being left there and not being noticed by all.thanx0

I haven't decided what we are doing for cake yet, but at weddings i've been to, after the ceremonial cutting the cake was taken away to be cut, and was offered to guests with tea/coffee after the meal. Anyleftovers being part of the buffet. the uncut remainder was then taken and sent to people who could not attend, work colleagues, fellow club members etc.
Works well with fruit cake, not so great with sponge. When you're chewing on life's gristle, don't grumble, give a whistle.

We are having cupcakes, I plan on having them offered around in the evening, and I will also be getting some boxes should people want to take one home.
Thinking back to the weddings Ive been in the last few years there has always been an option of having some that night (which tends to be taken more by evening guests) or taking some home.0 -
PinkPrincess, we're having cupcakes too. Do you mind me asking - how many cupcakes are you doing in relation to your number of guests? We'd originally requested 80, but our numbers including evening guests are now looking to be around 100. I'm wondering whether we need more, but 100 cupcakes seems like a lot!0

I'm making these. We're just having a hot buffet at night with no desserts so these will be piled high about half an hour after the buffet is closed.Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0 -
I sometimes bake cakes for friends wedding and I love it when it all disappears! Means I did good! We are having a dessert table which will be available for the evening. There will be hotpot served and the cakes to the side. I will also provide napkins and bags (boxes expensive!) for people to take. I have asked for 2 of the 3 cakes to be cut up and I will pop a sign up telling people to help themselves. There are no favours so it will double as that too.
Any left over will be taken and eaten by us.... (We have 6 kids between us so I don't think it will last long!)May GC - £100 per week
Week 1 - £120/£100 , Week 2 £110/100:o, Week 3 £110/£100:mad:, Week 4 £50/100Week 5
DFW - March '13 - c/c £5600, April £4500, May £2500 :T0
