Second the gargling.
Also ice cream is very soothing. Probiotic yoghurts also help rebalance the "good" bacteria, especially when you need to take anti b's.
If they are very sore and you can't eat, soluble aspirin 20 minutes before trying to eat.0 -
My doc recommended gargling with soluble aspirin (300mg tablet in glass of water) - then swallowing it.
The one thing I found best was a throat spray such as Vicks Chloroseptic numbed me nicely for a little while if I needed to be "on show" - it definitely helped me be able to speak a bit more clearly if I needed to.
However, I wouldn't recommend rushing back to work until you feel up to it, tonsillitis had a nasty habit of coming back when I least expected it and once I ended up with quinsy (abcess under my tonsils) and then pneumonia. Obviously, if you need to work then take it as easy as you can, and sit down at every available opportunity. We may not have it all together, but together we have it all
