Nas drives

So.. i'm looking for a NAS device that I can:

Store & Backup my family photos (now approaching 40gb)
Stream movies to my iPad / TV (dlna compatible) - don't have many but i want to rip my kid's DVDs to it
Not mind if it isn't plugged in all the time
Not break the bank

Any ideas? I guess i'd need 1TB of storage max

If your router has a USB port, why not plug in a portable hard drive on to it?

    Otherwise, a second-hand Netgear Stora MS2110 ?

2nd the portable hard drive - easier to set up but the pc it's attached to needs to be switched on if you want to access the contents from another computer/phone/whatever. I use both a huge Synology NAS (4 drives) and a very cheap (£40) Zyxel with a single drive. The Zyxel would work for you, but from experience I'd say if you think you need 1Gb, best get 2Gb to avoid upgrading in a year or so!

Virgin router... so no USB on the side. My laptop is rarely on (don't have a desktop PC) but the iPad is on a lot

Looks like this might fit the bill http://www.dabs.com/products/buffalo-1tb-linkstation-live-nas-7QMH.html?src=3 and is only £90
  • I don't need 2TB... even my music + photos comes to only 100gb. Leaves me with space for 900 movies. Now if the kids need more than 900 movies then i'll delete older ones and tell them to stop watching so much TV

If i wanted 2TB, i'd prefer it was RAID. Like this http://www.dabs.com/products/buffalo-2tb--2-x-1tb--linkstation--duo-raid-0-1-sata-300-6KQL.html?q=RAID&src=16

I've got an HP MediaVault MV2010 that I've had for 6 or 7 years now. It came with a 320GB drive and a spare slot. It now has a 1TB drive in the second slot.

Since new it has only been powered down three or four times, twice to upgrade the disks, once for a house move and that's about it.

It just sits on the network and does its thing. I use it with Linux, Windows and Macs.

I realize that the MV2010 is now obsolete but based on my experience with it I'd certainly look at a new HP MediaVault if I needed another one or a replacement.
One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.

Have you got an old PC that you could install something like freenas or open media vault? You might need to factor in the cost of a new (presumably bigger) hard drive and a network card if it doesn't have one, but it would then just plug into one of the ethernet ports on your router

    Just a thought

Have a look at WD My Book Live I have just installed on to act as a backup but mainly for Photos, Music and Movies.

Gets good write ups and Amazon reviews are normally quite good at pointing out flaws or extra bits that you hadn't thought of.

Are you kidding? It gets pretty mixed -> poor reviews...
