Credit Card Rejection/Acceptance Randomness

I am rather confused about how credit card companies reject or accept people for their cards.

I have held a Barclaycard before and a Halifax card before - they were closed after paying off the balance as some advice claims its better to close cards without a balance instead of keeping them.

But I have recently been rejected for both cards when I applied recently.

My credit history is spotless (obtained both my £2 reports from experian and equifax) and I paid £15 to get the full report with credit rating from experian which came out at 999/1000 (Excellent).

However there appears to be no reference on my credit report for a credit card seach by barclaycard - there only appears to be an address search ?

So did they not like my address ??? I live in the Isle of Man and have never had any rejections before on any credit cards I have held or currently hold (of the cards I do hold there is still plenty of credit available on them).

It just seems a bit random to be rejected when they dont appear to have check my rcredit report ???

Any ideas ?? :undecided

Check with them on how they treat the Isle of Man currently. It can be problematic and generally excluded from the definition of the UK.

Maybe you got rejected on available credit to you?

Appeal the decision and see how it goes.

Hmm that is the only thing I can possibly think of, unless they have suddenly decided not to accept IOM residents, would seem odd though.

I have sent them a letter with a prnt of the credit report showing my rating and references to my previous time holding a card with them, and a reference to a letter I received when I closed my card it last time saying that 'they would welcome me back anytime' !!

We will see if I get a full explanation !

  • You have credit card debt of 14.3K - how much do you earn?

Again, you score of 999 counts for little.

    Any defaults, missed payments, CCJs?

With thatt level of debt, not a shocker you were refused?

Perhaps not enough time has elapsed since the closing of the other accounts?

My income is about £43,000 and my credit card debts have been up and down between £3-4K and £15K but my overall credit limit is about £35 - £40K combined on all my cards.

No CCJs and perfect payment history.

Halifax card was closed about 3 years ago whereas barclaycard is about 8 months but i have reapplied for barclaycard in the past with no issues.

You already have credit available of around 90% of your income. This is likely why you were refused more credit - it's not 2007 any more!
