Youd be very lucky to get 15 years out of a new condensing boiler (Thanks Mr Prescot).........or even 10 years really.

The convenience of instant hot water and as much of it as I like means I'm happy with my newer combi boiler. Also getting rid of the water tank in the loft and the hot water tank freed up significant space.

I agree that combis are good in some situations.

Generally i feel they represent an un-necessary strain on the gas and water supply networks are wasteful of water and many would be better off with a HE conventional system oiler and a storage vessel. I think combis are a contributory factor in the ongoing water shortage reports.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

I think this is a bit of a fallacy really based on the early models, there is no reason why you shouldn't get 15+ years which is a lifespan manufacturers have been quoting for as long as I can remember.

I've just had my boiler renewed at a cost of £1850, the one it replaced was only 8yrs old, it broke in November and after 5 visits from engineers and lots of waiting they finally told me in January it wasn't worth repairing. I said to one of the fitters that the boiler in my last house was at least 25yrs old and never gave me any trouble, he said the older ones were very simple and didn't breakdown 'cos there was to go wrong.
I agree with the Op that i may have a more efficient system now that's going to be cheaper to run but at what price if it only lasts 10yrs with perhaps expensive repairs in between.

Maximum saving I'm getting out of my combi condensing boiler is 25%. That equates to a cost saving of £495 over the 4 years I've had it. There is an additional saving due to the fact that my water is now heated by gas; previously it was heated via electric immersion, so there is a saving from the drop in elec consumption.

Previous boiler was an Ideal Standard 25 year old boiler, which gave me trouble free heating. So far with the combi I've had no problems.

There are loads of threads on this subject –this being just one:

    https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2930080

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors stated a couple of years ago :
The average cost of installing one of these modern boilers is £1,720, but saves
on average just £95 off people's gas bills."

It is the ever changing regulations that bump up the cost of boiler replacement. To give one example:

I have a purpose built boiler room that is at the side of a garage. For some 15 years it had just the single air vent. Then the new regulations(according to BG) demanded that there be two vents. It would have been easy to cut a hole in the breeze blocks at the back of the boilerroom – but that is into the garage and doesn’t meet regulations. So another vent was cut through the brick wall.

I would say that even though we have a 'D' efficient rated old Baxi back boiler, we can't really complain about the bills, as they are good, but it's the awful wall vent that ruins everything.

We seem to be the only ones that complain about it. It could be because we are an end semi that is next to open land, but wind puthers through it, and it's just like having a window open. It soon gets rid of the heat even while the heating's on never mind afterwards.

So, we would love for the old thing to break down. I know the bills arn't bad, but as we lose alot of heat, it does still waste our money.

i heard the vent can be re-installed on the floor boards next to the boiler.

Replacing this antiquated boiler and system would easily save the mentioned 33%.

I have had customers who change from your set up to a new Combi save in excess of 40% off their gas bill.

You will be shocked at these results
This is the cost of running a combi boiler without using any gas, just on stand by
    1) Combi Boiler electric cost, stand by ...36 pence per day.. £131.40 per year
    2) Insurance for boiler £10 a month 1 year £100 per year
    3) Gas boiler life time is 10 to 15 years...plus fitting ./ £2000.. £166 per year
Total cost................£397 a year to run on stand by (not using any gas )
