standard size for kitchen unit shelf depth??

We are currently having a new kitchen put in and it is getting finished off tomorrow.

However, I have been having a nosy inside the units tonight and all the shelves are shorter than the carcasses. ie: wall units are 300mm depth and the shelves inside are only 200mm!! So a 1/3 of the storage space on each shelf is missing.

I have never seen another kitchen where the shelves are like this, our last 3 kitchens (in different houses) have never been like this.

Is this a standard thing?

I am very unhappy about it as it means we are losing 1/3 of our expected storage space and we have a small kitchen so need all the storage space we can get.

So just want to know, before I say something to them tomorrow,
is this a standard thing with kitchens these days?
can you get 300mm deep shelves anymore? - should these not been supplied as standard?

thanks

standard shelf on a 300mm unit is 250mm. You have the back board and 300mm is to the outside of the doors from the wall so all inside and unit batons reduce inside size to 250 max.(but 200 is very short )

For all the 'advantages' touted about hard backs in cabinets this is the first disadvantage of a hard back in a unit - less shelf space.

OP - I am not sure what the shelf depth is on most British made kitchens out there but the wall units for the German units we supply have a carcase depth of 340mm and a shelf depth on wall units of 305mm on side hinged units.

Thank you, I thought it was very short. Never seen it before.

Looks like I'm gonna have to have abit of a confrontation about it then which I hate. But I expect its not going to be easy to get longer ones from them.

Also found last night that sitters have scratch our aluminium chimney while putting glass hood on it. but bought that elsewhere so don't know whether they'll do anything about there.

Argh nothing ever seems to be straight forward.

Yes it is a solid back on the cabinets. The inside depth of the carcass is 280mm.
So a 200mm shelf is still too short, right?

    Hi

Whenever I have seen ridiculously shorter depth internal shelves it has always been in cheap, poorly made kitchens. Not saying your kitchen is poor quality but shorter shelves are only there for one of 2 reasons, either its a mistake or it is just done to save the manufacturer money.

Did you purchase the kitchen from a retailer with a showroom? If so what depth were the shelves in the display kitchens?

Anyway, good luck with your conversation with your supplier.

I think you will struggle with this one. I assume you saw the units in a showroom, in which case (the supplier will say) it was up to you to see that they were suitable for your needs.

    Thanks for your replies, guys.

The kitchen is made to a really good quality, but yes I agree shelves probably shorter to save money.

When I spoke to the supplier, he said that they are this size because (sorry cant remember the typical term for this) the wall units that have two doors, the piece of wood that is vertical where the doors meet is really chunky so the 20mm shelves sit snuggly behind it.

Anyway out of my 5 wall units, only 1 is double so supplier has said that they will do me some new shelves for the other 4 units to 25mm.

So really happy with this :)

even 25cm (250mm)you could do the double to 250mm too and scribe it around the post.
