Need a job? Job centre or agency?

We've been trying at work to find an office junior. We've contacted friends and family but everyone's working. I personally don't know anyone looking for work. Last time we tried the job centre, the cvs where good but when you rang them to offer an interview people either didn't bother turning up or they did turn up but only going through the motions. I'm not dissing anyone from the job centre but where's a good place to start without paying an agency fee? Thanks

have you thought of contacting a local college? They may have a careers department..alternatively one of the tutors from an admin course may know just the person

Try every avenue before using the JC, it's useless for companies and job seekers. I once advertised for a junior on JC never again

Well you do realise that whoever the agency send you, will probably be from the jobcentre anyway. Also, their standards are not as upto what yours would be.

There are alot of people jobless so it may be hard to find the hidden gems now. But again, JC is your bet. Not that the JC are bothered about candidates attitudes or their mentality.

You could try advertising in local paper?
Fact is whoever is jobless is either on JSA and if theyre not on JSA theyre not looking to be an office junior.

We go on JSA because when an employer wants to carry out thorough background checks you need to explain your gap in employment and justify why you didnt claim benefits. You cant just say i was on holiday because then they would like proof of this. Not everyone on the JSA is bad.

I can look at a CV and tell you whether they will be suitable for the job. My talent has let me down maybe 1% of the time. It is very rare for me to place a candidate that does not fit the job.

If you cant do this. Then your other option is an agency. Make sure you set your requirements with the agency. Otherwise they will send anyone and everyone.

Or people advertise themselves on there too so look at those adverts under work wanted - I have an advert there looking for work but no replies as yet.

Do you have other prior work experience? Even for an office junior role you're expected to have worked for someone, just anyone. Outside of that I can only say you'll have to volunteer or be an attractive looking female. Despite gender discrimination laws you'll find many employers deliberately hiring attractive female office juniors only.

If you have no prior office junior experience and not an attractive looking female then you'll probably land a £14k pa job at best. The world's very realistic unfortunately.
The OP is looking for an office junior not wants to be one
  • Sex and age doesn't matter in this job. Office junior is probably the wrong job title but that's all we could think of at the time. We are a small team of about 10 in the office but part of a multi international company. Our company attitude is you get along with everyone. There 4 women and 5 blokes and we are between 25 and 50. Money is on the high side because that is what we believe the job is worth.

You can also put an advert on Reed, Monster or any site - not sure of the fees on those however.

Wow thats an attitude you don't see very often these days. Its usually min wage and be thankful you have a job.
