MERGED: Missing Gas Bills/No Gas Bill

  • I've got a similar problem.

In October 2007 I bought a new build property as shared ownership with the local housing authority. In the buyer's pack it told my my gas and electricity was with EON. We took the meter readings when I got the keys and HA submitted them.

Didn't receive any bills. Neither did anyone else in our block (6 flats).

In January 2008 contacted EON, they had a record of number 78 having meters but the rest of us didn't exist. I asked them if they thought it was weird that our street went from 68 to 78 with nothing in between.

Checked with 78 to ensure she was not getting billed for the rest of us.

Phoned the national grid and transco. Was told that we didn't exist. Tried to register the meters by providing all the seriel numbers readings etc. Nothing.

Contacted the housing association about the problem, they said they would resubmit the paperwork for the meters and try and get it resolved.

In August 2008 did the ring round again as no bills. Still told we didn't exist.

Rang CAB. They said that as I had made efforts to locate and pay for energy that I could only be charged 6 months worth and it had to be at the prevailing rate in each month and that If i didn't have the money they had to accept the amount I offered on a repayment basis.

In Feb 2009 a scottish power door canvasser knocked on the door. I explained the problem. He said he could get me registered and get an Mpan number. Signed up and waited. Got a letter from Scottish Power saying I don't exist and therefore they cannot switch my supplier.

June 2009 rang HA again and said still had no bills and was concerned. Paperwork again submitted by HA to get us registered.

October 2009 still nothing, so rang EON/National Grid/Transco again. Still no luck. Spoke to HA, they said they'd look into it.

I've kind of ignored it since then, but I am conscious that my job may be precarious from next April so i really want to get this resolved while I am still reasonably solvent ;)

Phoned the HA again this morning.
  • Hi orangesmartie

I'm really sorry you're having such a nightmare registering your gas and electric with us.

Unfortunately, delays in registering energy supplies do sometimes happen with new builds. However, it doesn't usually take almost 3 years to sort out.

Not sure what has happened in your particular case but if you would like to send your details to me I will be happy to chase this up for you.

Just drop an email to the address in my Profile if you would like me to do this.

    Hi Malc,

Thanks for your message. We have chased the builders again yesterday and given them 7 days to get it sorted. If I have no joy next week, may I drop you a line then?
  • I was going to say its common with new builds but that's probably not fair. I'm sure there are loads of new builds which are properly registered from the outset. However if there is no supplier registered, or mixed up meter numbers, it is most likely to occur in new builds of flats.

If its bugging you, as I imagine the worry alone could, then you can nominate a supplier, they need some way of generating a supply number. Ask for thier new connections team or similar.

I always have a little devil on my shoulder when I read such threads thinking why bust a gut. But I know its wrong to get it for free...

I have that same little devil to be honest. My worry is one day I'll just get cut off and won't be able to get reconnected (and it will happen in the depths of winter). Frankly I've made every effort to pay for it, if no one wants my money, its not my problem......but then I wonder if some of the price hikes are down to this sort of thing happening - people all over getting free supply and everyone else having to compensate.

I also think perhaps our bills are going to the builder's head office, as was happening during the building phase and its never been properly transferred. If thats the case i'm not worried, let the builders foot the bill!

We've tried the nominating a supplier route and it hasn't worked :(

I even went on EON's site to do it and the website told me I was already a customer!

Will see what happens next week with the builders.

    Hi orangesmartie

By all means, drop me line whenever convenient to you. Will be happy to help. :)

Just a quick heads up, though; I am out of the office all next week but will reply as soon as I return. Please don't think I haven't received your email.

    Bump. :p

I am in the same position on this - I have a 'shipperless' supply.

Not sure what I should do - the building is far from a new build - maybe 20/30 years old. British Gas have confirmed the meter is not registered with the National Grid and I have had no gas bills from any existing suppliers. I only moved into here in August on a 6 month tenancy so I might well be gone again before its ever billed! I have a meter reading from when I moved in that the LL gave to me. Should I leave it and just negotiate a payment if its ever caught in the system somehow?

Otherwise my electricity usage is only about £15 a month so my utility bills will be cheap! If its not been caught for this long I'd imagine its been lost in the mire, let alone the difficulty they'll have in billing past use when there have been multiple occupants. I am tempted to leave it, but just wondering if there are any downsides aside from a potential unexpected bill whenever they catch up with it?

    Hi Piggeh,

I don't know the answer to this I'm afraid - but my experience is posting on this thread seems to get things moving ;)

I would suggest that you take a reading from the meter every week (round about the same time) and make a note of it. that way, if there is any come back you have an exact reading of the meters for that time. I would also advise you to keep a note of your phone calls with the companies and get names of who you spoke to. If possible, keep your phone bills and highlight those calls.

I've just gone through the energy ombudsman on this, as EON suddenly decided they were my supplier and would back bill, refused to answer my letters on the code of practice for billing and wanted my phone bills. I didn't have them unfortunately because i do everything electronically and had changed phone suppliers so had dumped the information. But I did have all the letters I'd sent and the names of people I'd spoken to on the phone.

The ombudsman did award in my favour - almost 4 weeks ago. Funnily enough I haven't heard from EON since then to implement the decision of the ombudsman (code of practice for billing does apply; an apology and a monetary credit for bad customer service), which is amazing because the can send me bills and threatening letters with alarming regularity.
  • I switched both gas and electricity from pre-payment to quarterly bills the same day, with meters installed a week apart from each other. This was about 9 months ago. We have since received quarterly electricity bills, but not one gas bill. I called them once and t was like I was talking rubbish or dreaming to them. I have since kept quiet because my solicitor friend said it is their fault. What do you think in my own case, as I was the one who requested the switch?

    Hello

I've been living at the same address for almost five years. When I moved in I registered for Gas and Electricity with nPower.

However, I have never received a gas bill. Until recently I assumed that they were dual fuel bills but I fell behind on electricity payments two years ago (estimated meter readings for two years, then got landed with a £2000 bill after a proper reading :( ) and had a prepay meter installed and I was told that the bill was only electricity.

I spoke to Npower at the time and they said that they would look into it but I never heard back. Now I have received estimated bills out of the blue billing me since summer of 2011, but when I called to give them my meter reading they say that I owe them £5500!

Are they able to charge me that full amount without any bills being sent? I definitely registered in the first place and chased it up a couple of years ago and while I understand that I should have been paying more attention to my bills, I find it a little unfair that they can bill me for so much in one go!

    Please help!
