lawnmower recommendations?

I am looking for a new lawnmower for my new garden and would appreciate some MSE recommendations.

I have quite a large grassy area in the garden but I am not too fussy about keeping it like a bowling green. At my old house, my trusty flymo hovermower did the job but it will take me ages to do the grass in this house with it.

So currently, it is too big for a wee hover mower but not big enough for a ride on mower and I am a lazy gardner who is looking for minimum effort and maximum impact.

I have dogs so the garden takes quite a bit of punishment from them so I just need to keep on top of the grass.

Any suggestions for a mower that is reliable, easy to push, plug in rather than petrol and has a wide cutting area? I don't ask for much do I?

Hayter Spirit. Great mower, fits all the requirements except cheap. Might be worth looking for a second-hand one?
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

This one looks like a great price.

Any particular model? I read some of the reviews on amazon and lots of people described them as plasticky, difficult to put together and the handles to switch it on are a bit dodgy.

How big is the grassed area? It sounds like a petrol model may be better for you than a electric.

  • Yeah, Bosch Rotak is available at B&Q etc and is pretty decent although would be a bit bulky and unweildy compared to a Flymo. Decent sized grass-box is a plus

I'm another Hayter fan. My previous Hayter lasted for more than 20 years. The one I'm using now had a three year guarantee.

Try and get a mower that has a mulching function. It's a great idea and saves all the time & fuss of emptying the box. The grass is cut & shredded in one action & left on the lawn. Amazingly you cannot see this cut grass & it is good as a feed for the lawn.

Not many mowers have this feature.
    Nice to save.

Thanks for that. They are really expensive aren't they?

Lotus-eater, I don't like the thought of messing with petrol and have an irrational fear of causing mayhem with a petrol mower :o

If I bought a petrol mower would I have to buy petrol from the petrol station? I have absolutely no idea about gardens or gardening :o

You get a petrol can and just fill it up at the pumps normally.

As I said, it depends how big the area you want to cut is. Doing my lawn with an electric mower and the cord all over the place, fills me with horror.

It's really easy, you just fill it up and go. Most petrol mowers are really good these days, easy to control/start, have a safety bar that stops the mower if you let go, have way more power than any electric one I've ever tried and you can go anywhere with one.
