Cheap Train. Edinburgh to London

Guys, in need of a hand. I get married on the 25th March and on Tuesday 27th we want to go away to London for 3 nights so we travel back on the Friday. Thing is, my passport is 7 months out of date but we found out we can fly on easyjet with my driving license.
I have checked out prices and they are rather expensive (well for me anyway) ..... so i thought about rail travel. So i searched leaving after 7 am from Edinburgh Waverly to any London mainline (not booked hotel yet, but can tube it across the city i guess)
Return on the Friday after 12 noon. The cheapest came in at £123 each!
I know you can break the journey up in train tickets. So as a quick one i went Edinburgh to Manchester, Manchester to London but the train in mManchester was a diff one to what i came down on...hmmm so i need to wait a bit. The total on that came to about £50.
But is there a way to break it down further or is this the best? Thanks

Passport?
Have they closed the border between Scotland and England already?
How did Mr Salmond manage that?0 -

The eastcoast website shows plenty of fares of £36.25 to London and £56.25 from London which I make £92.50.0

If you don't mind approx 9hr in a coach then you could do it for £34 (£17 each way per person) via Megabus

1986?Dear God! That's almost double what Stagecoach used to charge for their return fare back in 1986. £18 return (£13.50 with a student card). I remember it was cheaper when my TV stopped working to travel to Glasgow and fetch my B&W portable TV (anybody remember them) than buy a cheap one in London. Plus you got a free airline-style meal which was somehow heated up on the engine.
Aaah, luxury!:D
Well that was over 25 years ago.
Most prices have risen significantly since then.
