I did state that it was rare, but it can happen which is why manufacturers produce Flashback Arresters which can be fitted to gas appliance outlets, which prevent this from happening.

Regarding the original topic of this thread, any DIY gas work IS illegal. I quote from The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998...

Part B - Gas Fittings - General Provisions

    Qualification and Supervision
    3.1
No person shall carry out any work in relation to a gas fitting or gas storage vessel unless he is competent to do so.

And with regard to the definition of Competent (rather than the collins dictionary entry on the literal term)...

    3.3
Without prejudice to the generality of paragraphs (1) and (2) and subject to paragraph (4), no employer shall allow any of his employees to carry out any work in relation to a gas fitting or service pipework and no self-employed person shall carry out any such work, unless the employer or self-employed person, as the case may be, is a member of a class of persons approved for the time being by the Health and Safety Executive for the purposes of this paragraph.

Paragraph 4 goes on to state that the only exceptions to this rule are replacement of hoses and regulators on portable or mobile space heaters, or hose and regulators connecting to a refillable cylinder.

So therefore gas fittings, etc, etc can only be carried out by Corgi certified engineers (as they are currently the only gas institution) regardless of whether they are in your own home or not.

If you do insist on DIY gas fitting then you are open to full prosecution under these regulations.

    3.1 refers to competence

3.3 refers to what an EMPLOYER has to comply with and the definitions of competence an employer can accept.

3.3 is irrelevant to a competent DIYer, unless you can quote something different, 3.1 seems to be the only bit to restrict DIY gas work.
